Justice League Action Figures – Superman

The Justice league’s most famous member is without doubt Superman, affectionately known as the Man of steel. What is less commonly known is that Superman was probably the first of the modern-day superheroes. Writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster originally created the character in 1932. The character became famous after it appeared in action comics number one (June 1938)

Superman was one of the Justice league’s founding members and has consistently been one of the bedrock’s of the organization. In fact, in the latest incarnation, Superman once again plays a major part (along with Batman and wonder woman) in reforming the group.

Superman’s powers have been well documented on many occasions and so we will not review them here. I would rather take a different angle and look at why Superman is so popular. So popular in fact that Superman comic book sales have consistently eclipsed any other franchise since the day he was originally published and have never experienced a significant lull in 75 years of publication. I think that the movie Unbreakable sums it up best. Superman is different because Superman is Superman when he wakes up. Other popular heroes such as Batman and Spiderman don a costume to become the hero. When Peter Parker or Bruce Wayne awake, they awake as Peter Parker and Bruce Wayne. It is an interesting and subtle difference but I think that it is crucial to understanding Superman’s enduring popularity. We have a character that is being himself when he is being a hero, something that we all aspire to.
